ADAM COFFEY, CPA

Manager

It pays to know a good accountant — as a family member of CPA and tax specialist Adam Coffey discovered. “He had received a notice from the IRS assessing additional tax, as well as interest and penalties for the tax year at issue,” Coffey recalls. “He was extremely upset and distraught with the prospect of owing the IRS, as anyone would be.”

Swinging into action, Coffey compiled the information necessary to reply to the notice. “In the end, I was able to successfully dispute the notice in totality — thereby saving my family member a significant amount of money,” he says. “I’ll never forget the phone call to let him know … he was very happy, as you can imagine.”

Coffey, who grew up in Fox River Grove and graduated from Cary-Grove High School before going on to Northern Illinois University to earn a bachelor’s and master’s in accounting with a tax emphasis, joined Eder, Casella & Co. in May of 2018. “I had worked in public accounting at various CPA firms in the Chicago suburbs for 14 years prior to that,” he says. “My strengths include identifying relevant issues specific to a client’s unique financial situation and minimizing their tax liabilities to the fullest extent possible under the law in order to maximize their after-tax cash flow.” Adam stays active in the community with the Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Barrington Rotary.

Married to Jen since 2013 with a young son and daughter, Coffey admits that he loves making clients feel more at ease about complicated tax subjects. “My favorite part of being an accountant is answering tax and related financial questions, helping people understand tax law as it applies to them,” he says. “To hopefully alleviate as much of the stress or anxiety they may be feeling as possible.”

Coffey — who took the CPA exam after being out of school for over a decade and successfully passed each of the four parts in less than a year on his first attempt with scores in the 90’s — recommends that aspiring accountants seek out internships before completing their degrees. “It’ll help you develop a feel for the industry and determine if you want to focus your career path in tax, audit, public or private, or any of the various options you have,” he explains. “Once you finish school and start working, try to do the best you can all the time and learn as much as you can. The profession is constantly evolving as the world around us changes, and accountants need to adapt.”

Get to Know Adam — Seven Facts:

1. My first job was … “Washing dishes and other cleaning and busboy duties at my aunt and uncle’s restaurant where my mom also worked at. I enjoyed working with my older brother and family and the time we got to spend together.”

2. If I wasn’t an accountant … “I would probably be an engineer of some sort. I like math and knowing how things work and being able to fix them myself — but being an accountant, that doesn’t happen as often as I’d like!”

3. People would be surprised to know … “I’m a musician and play in a band with two of my best friends. I’ve played the guitar for over 20 years and taught myself how to play the piano … albeit not very well, by any means.”

4. My favorite musical acts are … “My musical tastes are wide ranging and all across the board, but are generally dictated by the mood I’m in. Some of my favorite bands are Nirvana, The Beatles and Tom Petty.”

5. Accounting is fun (yes, really!) because … “It’s the language of business, and knowing where your money is being earned and spent is vital to help you keep as much of it as possible.”

6. I look most forward to … “Raising our children to be the best people we can,  to see how they grow up and develop and what they become later in their lives.”

7. My favorite inspirational quote is … “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right.” – Henry Ford
